CanGeneTest
CanGèneTest was a pan-Canadian research consortium studying health care and health policy challenges in genetic laboratory services. The consortium was supported by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Genetic Disease Network, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health. It used a multidisciplinary approach to study the trajectory between fundamental research discoveries in genetics and the use of molecular diagnostic tests in the clinical setting. It also contributed to the dissemination of timely and relevant scientific materials to those interested in the broad field of genetic laboratory services, notably through the CanGèneTest e-newsletter. Training has been provided to students at pre-graduate, master and doctoral levels. The research network started its activities in 2005 with financial support from the Canadian Genetic Diseases Network, a network of Centers of Excellence, a three-year grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (provided jointly by the Institute of Genetics and the Institute of Health Services and Policy Research), the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. CanGèneTest included 17 principal investigators, 20 individual collaborators, mostly clinicians and laboratory professionals, and four national and international organization partners. CanGèneTest researchers have led and participated in numerous research projects in the field of genetic laboratory services. They have also collected and disseminated information related to the clinical Canadian genetic laboratories and distributed a bi-weekly horizon scanning e-newsletter examining headline news in applied genetic research, best practice guidelines, genetic policy making and GE3LS issues. The research network has assembled a bibliographic database of articles, papers and reports related to these fields, and continues to expand this database.
