General Through the creation of a multidisciplinary consortium of investigators, we aim to study genetic health services using an integrated approach including the broad perspective of organizational and professional dynamics that influence the offer and uptake of genetics tests by the health care providers and the population, the genetic testing infrastructure, the effectiveness of genetic testing and the impact of genetic testing on health outcomes.
Specific 1) To evaluate the effectiveness of genetic health services in Canada by
a) studying the dynamics between actors and institutions that have an impact on the ability to lead a rational development of genetics laboratories in Canada;
b) studying the current status of genetic health services in Canada;
2) to study the validity and cost-effectiveness of various genetic diagnostic tools, using empirical data from the population;
3) to develop tools and approaches to help decision makers to establish the relevance of introducing new diagnostic genetic technologies (with or without the presence of a solid evidence base);
4) to adapt health technology assessment approaches to genetic health innovations;
5) to lay the grounds for a systematic knowledge transfer strategy that will bridge producers, users, policy makers and consumers in genetic health services and;
6) to study the regulatory framework of the public offer of testing and of laboratory practices.
